Ninth tier match sets new league record attendance with clubs stunned by turnout

A ninth tier match sets a new league record attendance in midweek with the involved clubs stunned by the turnout of fans.

Wednesday night saw the first ever Worcester derby as Worcester Raiders played host to Worcester City in the Hellenic League.

There was huge excitement in days leading up to this fixture, with over 1,200 Worcester City fans alone in the away section of the Sixways Stadium.

The total attendance of the game ended up being 2,478, which smashed the Hellenic League record which stood at around 1,300 for a previous fixture.

The only goal of the game came five minutes in as Liam Lockett’s superb early strike was all that separated the two sides.

Worcester City started the brighter of the two, keeping the ball well in midfield after a throw in by Adam Mace, with his pass meant for Izak Reid but had been deflected by Raiders’ Jack Cresswell into the feet of Lockett.

He made his way into midfield, before smashing one from 30 yards out, giving Raiders’ keeper Ryan Young no chance of keeping out.

After the goal, City kept being a nusiance for the hosts, keeping hold of the ball and had much of the possession while also producing a good number of chances.

Worcester City saw Thompson Brown booked and sin binned for a few minutes prior to the whistle for half time, said to be for dissent.

The second half continued to be strong for City, dominated in possession, but couldn’t make many clear-cut chances.

Reid did at one point in the game break forward, dodged tackles and made his way past the goalkeeper, but saw his goal-bound effort cleared off the line by defender Jamie Sauntson.

Raiders didn’t offer much, but they did have a few efforts on goal as the 90 minutes were nearly up, Isaac Cooper being played in behind the City back line, headed towards goal, but City keeper Haydn Whitcombe saved to make sure the points were heading City’s way.

Worcester City’s victory now sees them go above Raiders into fifth place in the Hellenic League table, Raiders are sixth but on the same points after five games played each.

The top eight teams in the standings are currently separated by just three points at this early stage in the season, with Corsham Town leading on 13 points.
