Updated Standings After IND vs SL Super Four Match 4

The fourth game of the Super Four Stage of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 took place between India and Sri Lanka at the R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. It was a low-scoring thriller that had almost everyone on their toes. But in the end, it was Rohit Sharma’s men who held their nerves and booked their berth for the final.

India won the toss and opted to bat first. They had a staggering opening partnership as captain Rohit Sharma (53) and Shubman Gill (19) played magnificently well and put Sri Lanka bowlers under immense pressure. They stitched an 80-run partnership for the first wicket, their third consecutive half-century stand in the tournament, to set the tone.

But the introduction of Dunith Wellalage into the attack changed the complexion of the game. The Sri Lanka spinner removed both the openers along with Virat Kohli (3) as India were reduced to 91/3 from 80/0 in no time. Ishan Kishan (33) and KL Rahul (39) soaked in all the pressure in conditions where the ball was spinning sharply.

They added a vital 63-run partnership but after that, it was all about Sri Lankan spinners Dunith Wellalage and Charith Asalanka. They wreaked havoc across the Indian batting lineup and removed wickets like a pack of cards falls.

Dunith Wellalage picked fifer whereas Charith Asalanka picked four wickets that ruled India out of the game. Axar Patel played a vital hand down the order and scored 26 runs to power India’s total to 213 runs. Maheesh Theekshana for Sri Lanka also picked one wicket as it was the first time when all 10 Indian wickets were taken by spinners.

Sri Lanka with the bat had the worst possible start as they lost Dimuth Karunaratne (2), Pathum Nissanka (6), and Kusal Mendis (15) for just 25 runs. Sadeera Samarawickrama (17) and Charith Asalanka (22) played vital hands but Indian spinners got the better of them.

Sri Lanka was left tottering at 99/6 and it was when Dunith Wellalage (42*) and Dhananjaya de Silva (41) joined hands and brought Sri Lanka back into the game. They stitched crucial 63 runs for the 7th wicket and gave a real scare to the Indian team. But Hardik Pandya removed De Silva to ease off the pressure.

Kuldeep Yadav then picked the remaining two wickets in quick succession of time and wrapped up the innings to bundle out Sri Lanka for 172 runs and win the game by 41 runs. Yadav picked four wickets whereas Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah bagged two wickets each. Mohammad Siraj and Hardik Pandya too were amongst the wickets.
