New Year’s Day 2026 marked a historic moment with a first-ever Super Over in Betway SA20 history when Joburg Super Kings and Durban’s Super Giants thrilled at the Wanderers.
On Thursday, 1 January 2026, the Joburg Super Kings took on the Durban Super Giants at the DP Wanderers Stadium. Aiden Markram won the toss and elected to bowl first in overcast conditions. Faf du Plessis and Matthew De Villiers opened the innings for the Joburg Super Kings.
De Villers got the innings underway with a late cut for four runs. He nearly got caught and bowled off the bowling of David Wiese. Du Plessis played Wiese quite well, hitting him for two sixes in an over. He played a couple of straight drives early on.
After 7 overs, JSK were 72-0. De Villers was the first wicket to fall, scoring an impressive 38 off 26 balls. Rilee Roussouw was dismissed, caught and bowled off the bowling of Simon Harmer, and Faf du Plessis was the next wicket to fall, getting bowled by Noor Ahmed.
Ranjane scored an impressive 50 off 31 balls. He played the short ball particularly well throughout his innings. Donovan Ferreria ended off the innings well by scoring 33 off 10 balls.
Wiaan Mulder was dismissed by Noor Ahmed for 18 off 22. Ahmed took 3 wickets for 12 runs off his allotted 4 overs. He also claimed his 200th T20 wicket in the process. The Super Kings ended their innings on 205-4.
Devon Conway and Kane Williamson opened the batting for the Super Giants. Conway, in particular, played Subrayen very well at the start of his innings. Hossein ended up getting the better of Conway by dismissing him caught and bowled after he mis-timed a sweep shot. Jos Buttler mis-timed a ramp shot to get caught off the bowling of Gleason for 15 off 6 balls. Williamson was dismissed lbw off the bowling of Hossein for 22 runs off 20 balls.
DSG fell behind the run rate; however, Klaasen fought hard to turn this around. He played well to get his 29 off 19 balls. Evan Jones continued on his good form, scoring an impressive 43 off 17 balls before being run out.
Markram scored 37 off 30 balls, where he was unfortunately caught by Mulder off the bowling of Gleason.
The Super Giants ended their innings on 205-8.
This resulted in the first-ever Super Over in SA20 history.
The Super Giants sent Evan Jones and Jos Buttler into bat. After some superb bowling from Gleason, the Super Giants only managed 6 runs from their over. The Super Kings managed to chase these runs down without losing any wickets.
