27 Years of Wait Ends As South Africa Win Their Second ICC Trophy After Beating Australia in WTC Final

27 Years of Wait Ends As South Africa Win Their Second ICC Trophy After Beating Australia in WTC Final

At Lord’s, the most iconic ground in world cricket, South Africa did what no one expected. They defeated Australia by six wickets and became the third team to win the World Test Championship. It was more than just a win, it was a reply to years of heartbreak, jokes, and the unwanted tag of ‘chokers’.

Rabada’s Fire, Cummins’ Fight

South Africa won the toss and bowled first. Kagiso Rabada gave his team a dream start, picking up five wickets. Steve Smith and Beau Webster saved Australia from a collapse with a handy partnership, but they could only manage 212 runs on a tricky pitch.

In reply, South Africa had a terrible start. Aiden Markram fell in the very first over, and soon they were 30/4. It was Temba Bavuma who started to steady the innings, but Pat Cummins was in the mood. The Australian captain took 6 wickets for just 28 runs and South Africa were bowled out for only 138.

South Africa Stay in the Fight

With a 74-run lead, Australia wanted to put the match out of South Africa’s reach. But Rabada and his fellow bowlers came back strong.

They had Australia at 73/7, but Alex Carey and Mitchell Starc added valuable runs. Australia ended with 207, setting a target of 282 for South Africa.

Chasing 282 in a final is never easy. South Africa had been bowled out for 138 just a day earlier. But this time, Aiden Markram came with a purpose.

Markram, Bavuma Lead The Way

Aiden Markram played one of the best knocks of his life. His century gave South Africa belief. At the other end, skipper Temba Bavuma walked in with the score at 70/2. He batted with calm and courage.

In the middle of his innings, Bavuma pulled his hamstring but continued to fight. The two added 147 runs together and brought South Africa very close to the target. Even though both got out later, Bedingham and Verreynne finished the job.

First ICC Title In 27 Years

This is South Africa’s first ICC trophy since 1998, when they won the ICC KnockOut (now Champions Trophy). Temba Bavuma now joins Hansie Cronje as the only South African captains to win an ICC event.

From being called chokers for years to lifting the World Test Championship mace at Lord’s, this win is more than just a title. It’s a moment of hope, belief, and history for South African cricket.
