Gautam Gambhir did take some bold calls before the Sri Lanka Tour. While the T20I series ended well with a whitewash, it was a shock defeat for him in the ODI series. Team India did not manage to win even a single game. Now, Gambhir could be forced to take back some of his decisions. Here, we take a look at the list of three major decisions Gambhir took for the Sri Lanka Tour which he might soon change.
1) Shubman Gill as the vice-captain
It was a big call to appoint Gill as the vice-captain of the white-ball squads. Of course, it would have been a joint decision by Ajit Agarkar and Shubman Gill.
However, Gill is still young and he is yet to assert himself as a batter in T20Is and Tests. Moreover, India has other worthy vice-captaincy candidates. By changing this decision, Gambhir gets a chance to change the combination at the top if Gill is out of form.
2) Flexible batting order in ODIs
Flexible batting order in ODIs is one of the major decisions Gambhir took for the Sri Lanka Tour which he might soon change. In ODIs, it is never a good call if you tinker too much with the batting line-up.
Gambhir did that and it was one of the main reasons why India could not do well with the bat. Now, Gambhir must be stubborn with the batting order and should change it unless really necessary.
3) No Yashasvi Jaiswal in ODIs
Yes, it may not be best to mix formats but Yashasvi Jaiswal is a special cricketer and he deserves to be an all-format batter. Having done well in both ODIs and T20Is, it is logical to give him a run in ODIs, as well.
India needs to tackle spin better at the top of the order. Yashasvi Jaiswal is a good player of spin and is also a left-hander. At least, as a backup, he deserves some chances in the ODI team.
