Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have made a notable impact in the Indian Premier League (IPL) since their debut. As the team gears up for the 2025 season, some significant changes are expected ahead of the mega auction, with the announcement of Zaheer Khan as their new bowling coach.
A quick glance at LSG’s IPL journey
Debut and initial success
LSG entered the IPL in 2022, quickly establishing themselves as a competitive force. Backed by a strong squad and substantial investment, they reached the playoffs in their debut season, narrowly missing out on a spot in the final. Their impressive start set high expectations for the seasons ahead.
Performance in the 2023 season
Building on their debut, LSG delivered another strong performance in IPL 2023, once again reaching the playoffs. Combining experienced players with emerging talent, the team maintained a competitive edge, known for their aggressive batting and disciplined bowling under the leadership of KL Rahul.
Challenges in the 2024 season
However, 2024 proved to be a difficult year for LSG. Despite their past successes, they finished seventh on the points table, marking a significant dip in performance. This disappointing season raised concerns within the franchise and called for potential changes ahead of IPL 2025 auction.

Quinton de Kock
After a stellar 2022 season with 508 runs in 15 matches, Quinton de Kock struggled in IPL 2023 and IPL 2024. Despite his T20 World Cup success, LSG may consider releasing him due to the slow pitch conditions in Lucknow, which do not suit his batting style.
KL Rahul
Questions loom over Rahul’s future with LSG, despite an improved relationship with franchise owner Sandeep Goenka. It wouldn’t be surprising if the franchise parts ways with him, especially with past dissatisfaction over his leadership.
Naveen-ul-Haq
Naveen-ul-Haq has been effective for LSG, taking 25 wickets in 18 matches, but retaining him might be difficult due to BCCI’s likely limit on overseas players. With Nicholas Pooran and Marcus Stoinis expected to be prioritized, Naveen could be on the release list, despite making an impact with the white leather.
