It ended Newcastle 2 Fulham 1.
Ahead of each game we ask one of our writers to come up with three positives and three negatives following the match.
An interesting game at St James’ Park…
Plenty to talk about after this one.
On this occasion it is The Armchair Fan.
POSITIVES
Result
This is cup football and the only thing that ultimately matters is the result.
Newcastle won 2-1 to send St James’ Park delirious, especially when the winning goal hit the net in injury time, just when it looked like the match would have to be decided by a dreaded penalty shootout.
Wissa
It’s always great to see a striker score on his first start.
We’ve waited a long time to see Wissa start a match in a black and white shirt and scoring just ten minutes in, will have done him the power of good.
There’s no denying he gives us something totally different up front and to see him running at defenders makes me wonder if he could be the perfect strike partner for Woltemade’s hold up play.
The Toon Army
Speaking of Woltemade, he must have been anxious about the reception he was going to get just a few days after the events of Sunday 14th.
You could see the relief on his face as he was applauded when warming up and then again when he was roared on to the pitch, serenaded as he was introduced as a second half half substitute.
Brilliant stuff and must mean the world to him.
NEGATIVES
Injuries
The sight of Livramento limping off with a suspected knee injury was the very last thing we wanted to see.
That’s now six defenders injured with a fair few out for some time.
The matches are coming thick and fast and we really can’t afford to be stretched any further.
Defensive frailties
What was going on for Fulham’s goal?!
John Beresford was our closest defender to him and he was doing a talk-in at the bar!
The last thing we need is to give away silly goals, especially when they could cost us a cup.
Definitely an area for improvement.
Inconsistency
Whilst I enjoyed this win, we’re really struggling to put any kind of run together.
Last season, the cornerstone to our success was winning twelve of fourteen matches between mid-December and mid-February and we could do with something similar this time around to have us battling for glory on all four fronts.
