The trend has changed now. Earlier, nations used to opt for coaches with a lot of experience. However, right now, the inclination is towards younger coaches with fresh ideas and tactical perspectives. Hence, we are seeing the average age of coaches reduce in recent days. The time is not far before we see the role of a player-coach becoming regular in the international cricket scene. On that note, here, we take a look at the list of the three youngest Head Coaches in International Cricket right now.
Note: We have considered only the Top 10 cricketing nations for this list.
3) Brendon McCullum – 42 Years
Bazz took an early retirement and did not waste time in getting into coaching. He took a role with KKR in IPL and then arrived in England.
He has revolutionized England’s Test cricket approach. The Kiwi will target to win the WTC at the earliest as that is the only trophy he can win as a Test Head Coach.
2) Gautam Gambhir – 42 Years
Gautam Gambhir stands at No.2 on this list of youngest Head Coaches in International Cricket right now. The latest appointment joins this list. Gambhir was the Mentor of KKR in IPL 2024. Before that, he had done a similar job for LSG.
Although he has no coaching experience, there is high hope for him in the Indian cricket circles. Since it was not long ago that he was playing, the top brass will hope that under him, India will adopt more fluently to the modern requirements.
1) Daren Sammy – 40 Years
The youngest Head Coach at the moment hails from the West Indies. A multiple ICC trophy-winning captain, Sammy was challenged with the task of getting West Indies cricket back on track.
To an extent, he has done a decent job. Yes, the team failed in the 2024 T20 WC but there was progress to be seen. The team’s next target will be to win the 2026 T20 World Cup.
