Former Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma has responded to criticism about his IPL run-scoring record, stressing that personal milestones mean little if they don’t lead to trophies.
In a recent interview, the ‘HitMan’ clarified that his focus has always been on helping his team win matches rather than chasing big individual numbers.
“I always try to win matches for my team. Whether I score 600, 700, or even 800 runs — it doesn’t matter if you don’t end up winning the trophy,” Rohit said, indirectly addressing his critics.

Interestingly, many fans believe Rohit’s comments also serve as a subtle dig at Virat Kohli, who has scored heavily in multiple IPL seasons but has yet to lift the trophy with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

Rohit recalled the 2019 ODI World Cup, where despite scoring 648 runs — the most in the tournament — India failed to win the title.
“If you don’t go all the way and win it, what’s the point of scoring 500 or 600 runs? It might be good for me personally but not for the team,” he added.
Following a slow start to the season, Rohit Sharma has bounced back with consecutive half-centuries, accumulating 240 runs in nine matches at a strike rate of 156 this IPL season.
Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians have staged a strong comeback in IPL 2025 after a poor start. With six wins from 10 matches, they currently sit in second place on the table.
The five-time Champions need just two more victories from their remaining four matches to confirm a playoff spot. Their next challenge is against Rajasthan Royals at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.
