India’s new T20I captain, Surya Kumar Yadav, praised the team’s spirit after a thrilling victory over Sri Lanka in the third T20I on Tuesday, July 31 at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele. India won the match in a super over, even though Sri Lanka only needed 23 runs from four overs with eight wickets left.

However, Washington Sundar (2/23), Rinku Singh (2/3), and Suryakumar Yadav (2/5) helped India turn the game around with their bowling, limiting Sri Lanka to 137/8 in their 20 allotted overs. In the super over, Washington Sundar dismissed Kusal Perera and Pathum Nissanka in just three balls, giving away only two runs. Later, captain Suryakumar Yadav successfully chased the target of three runs with the first ball.

After thinking about his team’s surprising victory, Suryakumar praised their strength and their skill in staying calm to change the game in their favor.

“I think what was more important than the final over was when we had scores of 30/4 and 48/5. The way the players showed their strength in the middle and took control of the game… I thought 140 was a good score on that field. When we were preparing to play, I told them, ‘I’ve seen games like this before. If we give our best for one and a half hours, we can make it happen.’ If you enjoy scoring 200-220 and winning games, you should also enjoy situations like 30/4 and 70/5 because that brings balance to your life and that’s how you keep going and stay humble,” Suryakumar said during the post-match interview.

The Indian captain also praised the skill level of the team, saying it makes his job easier, and also talked about the good team spirit.

In the meantime, after winning the T20 series 3-0, the two teams will compete in a three-match ODI series starting on August 2. This will be the first time that experienced players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will play in the 50-over format.
