Heartbreak News of Anshuman Gaekwad:
He had been enduring a long struggle with the disease. Gaekwad traveled to London for treatment and recently returned to Baroda a month ago to continue his care. Despite his efforts to combat the illness, his condition remained challenging. His journey through treatment reflected his resilience and determination, but unfortunately, his battle ended in his passing. His ongoing commitment to fighting the disease, even while managing his health in different locations, is a testament to his strength and courage.
BCCI and His Fellow Cricketers Helped Him as well:
In a gesture of empathy, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah pledged INR 1 crore to support former Indian cricketer Anshuman Gaekwad. Shah personally reached out to Gaekwad’s family to offer heartfelt support during this difficult time. The BCCI also assured extensive assistance to Gaekwad’s family, expressing optimism and confidence in his recovery despite the grave situation.
Former cricketer Sandeep Patil had earlier brought Gaekwad’s dire condition to light, revealing that Gaekwad had been valiantly battling his illness for over a year. Patil noted that Gaekwad had been undergoing treatment in London before returning to India for continued care.
Gaekwad shared his financial struggles with Patil, who then informed former cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar. In response, Vengsarkar contacted BCCI Treasurer Ashish Selar, who committed to resolving the financial support issue. 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev, joined by cricket icons Mohinder Amarnath, Sunil Gavaskar, Sandeep Patil, Dilip Vengsarkar, Madan Lal, Ravi Shastri, and Kirti Azad, advocated for financial aid to support Gaekwad. They collaborated to raise funds for their ailing colleague.
Anshuman Gaekwad’s Glorious Career:
Former India coach Anshuman Gaekwad played 40 Tests and 15 ODIs for India between 1975 and 1987. He amassed 1,985 runs in Tests, including a top score of 201 against Pakistan, and 269 runs in ODIs. Gaekwad first took on the role of India coach in October 1997, serving until September 1999, during which Anil Kumble achieved his historic ten-wicket haul against Pakistan. He briefly returned as coach after Kapil Dev’s tenure, leading the team for two months before John Wright’s appointment. In June 2018, Gaekwad was honored with the C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award by the BCCI.
