Rishabh Pant’s reverse sweep ends in dismissal against MI

Rishabh Pant was dismissed on just his second ball against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium in the 45th match of the IPL 2025. The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) skipper failed yet again, as he tried to reverse sweep Will Jacks’ delivery over the top of the third man, who was fine, but ended up handing a catch straight to Karn Sharma inside the circle.

Pant entered the middle when LSG lost their best batter, Nicholas Pooran, for 27(15). The southpaw, who was on a string of poor performances, tried to redeem himself by playing a good knock. On the very first ball against Jacks, an edge was induced from Pant’s outside half, and the ball travelled for a boundary.

The LSG batter then tried to reverse sweep the ball over the infield to fetch a boundary on the following delivery. Unfortunately for him, the ball was fuller, and there was not enough elevation. As a result, the ball went straight to Karn, who made no mistake.

Pant’s poor form in the IPL 2025 continues

It was yet another failure for the most expensive player in the history of the IPL. More importantly, the fact that he chose to get out by playing a reverse sweep – the same shot which has not brought him enough success in the recent past – did not go down well with fans and critics, who went hard at him on social media.

In the ongoing season, Pant’s best knock was against CSK, where he scored 63(49). Against DC, his former team, the star batter registered ducks in both matches. Against PBKS, the southpaw registered a 6-ball 2 and a 5-ball 2, respectively.

Against SRH, the wicketkeeper-batter scored 15(15), his only double-digit score apart from his 63 against CSK and 21(18) against MI in Lucknow. Against RR, the star batter scored 3(9) and got out while attempting to play a reverse sweep. Pant’s reckless shot, along with his poor form, is being questioned after yet another forgettable outing.
