PSL set to collide with IPL due to ICC Champions Trophy 2025

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is on course for a direct collision with the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2025 due to the scheduling constraints imposed by the ICC Champions Trophy.

PCB confirms schedule dilemma

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed that the popular T20 tournament is likely to be held in April-May next year, a period traditionally occupied by the IPL.

The decision to shift the PSL window has been necessitated by Pakistan’s packed international cricket calendar. The PCB is hosting a tri-series at home, followed by the Champions Trophy and a tour by the West Indies next year, leaving a limited window for the PSL.

PCB seeks franchise input

In a bid to find the most suitable window for the PSL and beyond, the PCB held a brainstorming session with franchise owners.

“As always, we had a very exciting and interesting brainstorming session with the franchise owners on the window for HBL Pakistan Super League 2025,” said Salman Naseer in a PCB release.

Naseer emphasized the importance of franchise input in the decision-making process.

“The passionate franchise owners provided their all-rounded insight and views on the PCB-recommended window and playoff venues for the 2025 event and beyond,” he added.

The PCB will now share further data with the franchise owners to allow for more detailed discussions and informed decision-making. The final decision on the PSL window is expected to be taken at the General Council meeting.

“At the back of this meeting, and in relation to the most suitable window for HBL PSL 2025 and beyond, the PCB will share further data with the franchise owners so that they can discuss amongst themselves, make a more informed decision and share their ideas and thoughts at the General Council meeting,” the PCB Chief Operating Officer stated.

A new challenge for PSL

The potential clash with the IPL presents a new challenge for the PSL. Both leagues have grown exponentially in popularity and have become major sporting events in the subcontinent. A direct confrontation could impact viewership and revenue for the Pakistani tournament.

However, the PCB has made it clear that the scheduling constraints leave little room for maneuver.

“We look forward to working closely with the franchisees to take timely decisions for the future trajectory of one of Pakistan’s biggest brands,” Naseer said.

While the exact impact of the clash remains to be seen, it is clear that the 2025 cricket calendar is set to be a highly competitive one. With two of the world’s biggest T20 leagues vying for attention, fans are in for a thrilling ride.

The PCB will continue to monitor the situation and work with all stakeholders to ensure the success of the PSL in the coming years.
