Former India fielding coach R Sridhar supports Shubman Gill as the future leader across all formats for India, following Rohit Sharma. Gill has recently been named the vice captain for India’s T20I and ODI teams during their current tour of Sri Lanka. The young player surpassed more experienced players like Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul to earn this position.
Gill recently took charge as captain for the tour in Zimbabwe, where he guided a young team to a 4-1 victory in a five-match series, despite losing the first T20I. He also topped the run charts in the series, scoring 170 runs over five innings.
Sridhar praised both Gill and Yashasvi Jasiwal for their performances, stating they have proven their worth in both ODIs and T20Is. He described Gill as a protégé of India’s captain Rohit Sharma and predicted that Gill will lead India in all formats after the 2027 ODI World Cup.
“Based on their recent performance, especially in the India-England Test series and the ODI matches, I believe these two players are securing their spots in both T20Is and Tests. For me, Shubman Gill is a player who can perform in all formats. I think he will learn from captain Rohit Sharma in Test matches and ODIs. I am confident that India will consider him as a future captain after the 2027 World Cup in all formats,” said Hindustan Times.
