Sri Lankan cricket player Praveen Jayawickrama is facing accusations of breaking three rules related to the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) anti-corruption policies. These include not reporting an attempt to fix matches quickly and interfering with evidence. The 25-year-old left-handed bowler, Jayawickrama, is said to have not informed the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit about people trying to involve him in fixing international matches and games in the Lanka Premier League in 2021.
The ICC mentioned on their website on Thursday that “It is claimed that the Sri Lankan bowler deleted messages about the attempt to engage in dishonest practices.” Jayawickrama has been given 14 days from August 6 to respond to these charges.
“Jayawickrama has been accused of violating a rule that requires him to quickly inform the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) about any attempts to fix future international matches. This includes not reporting promptly when he was asked to get another player involved in fixing during the 2021 Lanka Premier League on behalf of someone else. Additionally, he is accused of hindering the investigation.”
The International Cricket Council (ICC) stated, “Article 2.4.7 – Interfering with the investigation by removing messages where attempts and proposals to participate in dishonest behavior were discussed.” The ICC further mentioned, “In accordance with Articles 1.7.4.1 and 1.8.1 of the Code, Sri Lanka Cricket and the ICC have decided that the ICC will handle the case related to the Lanka Premier League allegations along with the charges concerning international matches.”
