While checking the race results from the Kenda Cup which was held this past weekend in Temecula, California, we noticed that one of the riders, Stan Ford, was listed as being 80 years old.
We checked with our friend/contributor Gavin Burke to see if he had any photos of Stan from the race, but he didn’t.
Gavin told us that he had a shot of Stan Ford from another race from a few months ago, and Gavin told us he’d send us that photo later in the day. Gavin was heading out to do an e-bike ride with another rider, Don Cousins, who is soon going to turn 92 years old. We asked Gavin to see if he could get a shot of Don, too.
Sure enough, Gavin sent us photos of both of them.
Here’s a photo of Stan Ford racing a few months ago.

Next, here’s a shot of Don Cousins, who is 91 years old, riding his Specialized Turbo Levo yesterday (February 2nd, 2026):

We checked some of our previous posts to see if we could find any photos of Frederic Schmid, who was still racing in his eighties the last time we saw him. We found the following photo of Fred Schmid from 2014, when he won the U.S. National Championships in the 80 and older class:

Here’s what we said about him then: “Fred Schmid of Texas is now 81 years old, with World Championships and National Championships to his name, and still racing. This was at the National Championships in Pennsylvania this past summer [2014], where “Fast Freddy” won again. Fred took up mountain biking in his early 60s after his wife Suzanne gave him a bike for a birthday present. They took up riding the trails together (and still do), and he soon took up racing. He’s apparently not done yet. Photo: JK/Mountain Bike Action, Sept. 8, 2014
We checked rootsandrain.com to see if we could find any later results for Fred Schmid, and we found the following report showing that he won the US XC National Championship again, four years later, in July 2018, when Schmid was racing in the 85-89 year old class:

Here’s a video of Frederic Schmid from four years ago, after he won the cyclocross national championship. He was 88 at the time:
We wanted to see what happened to Frederic Schmid since then and found that he raced in the Unbound Gravel last year, in 2025, at the age of 92 years old. Here’s a video of him from that race, along with an on-camera interview with him:
Unfortunately, Frederic Schmid dropped out of the Unbound 200 after going 40.5 miles, a little over four hours into the race. We found his results when we did a search for his name in the race results.
