Forest Green manager Robbie Savage responds to being linked with the Blackburn job

Forest Green manager Robbie Savage responds to being linked with the Blackburn Rovers job, first with a tweet, then a video.

Pete O’Rourke reported that Robbie Savage was a top contender for the vacant managerial role at his old club, and that he fits the profile for the Ewood Park powerbrokers, who suits their plans to build from the academy and use a young squad.

This then led to many a speculation from fans, media outlets, pundits having their say, then he became the favourite with the bookies.

Reporter Elliott Jackson tweeted: “At this stage of the process, names will be thrown into the media. It’s how the game works, everyone tries to benefit (don’t blame them). Until talks are held or an approach made, it’s all speculation so not worth losing your minds over. #Rovers”

Chris Sutton wrote: “Genuinely be good to see Rob get a chance at a club he loves. However I suspect the owners ambition won’t match Rob’s or anyone’s for that matter…”

Replying to a report, Savage himself has since replied with a facepalm and a laughing emoji.

Then a tweet emerged on the Forest Green social media…

Interviewer: Gaffer, good morning. Obviously a lot of speculation on social media yesterday about you being linked with the Blackburn Rovers job. Anything you’ve got to say about it?

Robbie: It’s purely speculation. Listen, I love my time there. Brilliant football club. Loved all my old clubs I played for, but it’s purely speculation.

“Listen, it’ll be somebody else’s name tomorrow. I love my time here. I’ve got a great relationship with Dale, Asif and Mike.

“We’re on a journey, a project, and it’s something that I can’t wait to see through. So, yeah, purely speculation, and I’m sure it’ll be somebody else’s name tomorrow. Nothing for the fans to worry about. Nothing at all.”

Here’s how fans reacted after Forest Green manager Robbie Savage responds to being linked with the Blackburn job…

@dezroberts1: Blackburn ring this afternoon then he’s off. Hardly turning them down

@bez204: What manager does this 🤣 he absolutely loves it doesn’t he

@WLodge_39: Course he will rule himself out if it. Blackburn isn’t a job in which he will have a massive financial advantage over most other clubs in the league so he’d actually have to be good at the job

@ShaunPendlebur2: Would absolutely love him at Rovers he is everything we need but no chance our moronic owners would do this. They want someone to come in and do as they say which is why we are in freefall.

@Olliehand2: Same man signed a two year contract and I quote said “Macclesfield is my club” and went on to say he wouldn’t wanna leave for any other club then left a week later, what he says means fuck all

@ConnorTSWFC: Why would you come out and say this through official club media because there’s absolutely no way in the world he wouldn’t snap their hands off if offered it 🤣

@AdsKnowsBall: I like Savage, great geezer but he wouldn’t have been offered it anyway. League 2 gaffa who’s over achieved with some lovely budgets. Need an experienced no nonsense gaffa in #Rovers

@GiallorossiBlue: With all due respect this means nothing does it? Savage is hardly gonna come out and say he wants to leave is he? It likely is just speculation at this point but there’s no way he turns the job down if it gets offered.

@Tomw0892: You can tell from his face theres something in it. Can see him at Blackburn by Monday.

His Forest Green side, currently sit 4th in the National League, with 58 points from 30 games played, 9 points behind leaders Rochdale.

Goals from Gabriel Kircough (14′), Nicolas Haughton (51′), Ricardo Rees (54′) and Tom Knowles (77′) helped Rovers beat Woking 4-2 in midweek.

He said after the game, per Gloucestershire Live: “As a collective, we were unbelievable, fantastic, that’s us. At half-time, I gave them the same message, ‘keep doing what you’re doing because you’ve been brilliant.’ I know we were 2-1 down; they had two shots, two goals.

“We needed a win tonight, it wasn’t about the performance, the best thing was that the performance was incredible, it was dynamic; pace, power, creativity, people who wanted the ball, defended well.

“We have to thank our sporting director, Mark Bowen, for how we recruit, we’re finding young talent, and we’re getting the best talent from higher up, I can mention all of our loans, they’ve been brilliant.

“It was a great ball from Jayden, a great header from Gabe.

“He [Haughton] was brilliant, it was a great goal, Jayden Clarke too, they all were, even when the subs come on, all I ask for my team to do is to run around at times.

“If we’d have had Ricardo [Rees] at the start of the season, we’d be up there with York and Rochdale, we haven’t, but now we’ve got him, we’ve got him on a long-term contract. He’s enthusiastic, he’s passionate.

“He comes in and says, ‘I’ll score tonight,’ it’s unbelievable the confidence that man has, and not only can he score goals, but he’s also a great person.

“Knowlesy needed that, he’s lacked a bit of confidence, I pulled him and told him he’d been magnificent for me, he’s not a right back, we know that, but his performance, his goal, you can see what it means to him.”

On Doidge: “He’s been great around the group, helpful, encouraging, even when he’s not in the team, I need to use his experience.

“His aura around the group is brilliant, he’s a club legend, the fans love him, at half-time, fans are asking to bring on Doidgey, but we’ve got to look and assess, but he’s a club legend and that can never be taken away from him.”

On facing York next up: “I’m not worried about York because they’re a top team. The biggest mistake I’ve made this season was worrying about Rochdale; we’re going to have a go against York.

“We’re not thinking about stopping York, we’re going to play our game, can they stop us, and if they beat us, it’ll be a good game.”
