The Antigua & Barbuda Falcons are the latest addition to the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), marking a new chapter in the tournament’s history. Set to replace the Jamaica Tallawahs from the 2024 season, the Falcons bring a fresh wave of excitement to the league. Based in the cricket-loving island of Antigua and Barbuda, the franchise is owned by Worldwide Sports Management Group.
Kris Persaud: The owner of new CPL franchise Antigua & Barbuda Falcons
Kris Persaud, the owner of new CPL franchise, the Antigua & Barbuda Falcons, is a significant figure in Caribbean cricket, especially within the CPL. His journey in cricket franchise ownership began with the Jamaica Tallawahs, a CPL team he acquired in 2017 from businessman Manish Patel. Under Persaud’s leadership, the Tallawahs experienced success, notably winning the CPL title in 2022. However, his time with the Tallawahs was marred by a lack of governmental support in Jamaica, leading to his decision to relocate the franchise.
Persaud, originally from Guyana and now based in Florida, is deeply passionate about cricket. His move to Antigua and Barbuda is a strategic one, driven by the island’s rich cricketing culture and the promise of greater local support. Antigua, with its storied cricket history, offers a more conducive environment for the growth of a CPL franchise. According to Cricbuzz, he was quoted as saying:
“We won the tournament in 2022 and received no acknowledgement/appreciation from anyone in the government, and so we have decided to cut our losses and leave the situation to the CPL. (We’re) looking forward to exciting times in Antigua where cricket is an intrinsic part of the culture.”
The team’s official unveiling took place on 20 February 2024, at the iconic Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Sugar Factory, Saint George, which will serve as their home ground. This move is expected to deepen the connection between the local community and the CPL, as cricket remains an integral part of Antigua’s cultural fabric.
Guided by the experienced hand of cricket legend Shivnarine Chanderpaul as their coach, the Antigua & Barbuda Falcons are poised to make a strong impact in the CPL. Chanderpaul’s extensive knowledge of the game, coupled with the strategic leadership of owner of new CPL franchise Kris Persaud, promises to create a competitive and dynamic team.
