The fact that I am even being asked this Eddie Howe question really saddens me

Along with a number of other Newcastle United fans who are regular contributors to The Mag, I was contacted by the Editor on Sunday afternoon, asking what I thought about the current situation regarding Eddie Howe and NUFC.

This followed a poll going up on the Sunday morning which asked Newcastle United fans: ‘Do you now want Eddie Howe sacked, or continue and at end of season evaluate everything?’

Ahead of that poll result, the idea was for something to go up on Sunday night, with in more detail a decent cross-section of what Newcastle United fans (who are regular contributors to The Mag) were thinking.

That article featuring various views on the Eddie Howe situation went up on Sunday evening but I didn’t have time to contribute before the deadline.

So I thought I would still send my thoughts and hopefully the Editor will think they are worth using as a separate article.

By the way, the poll of thousands of Newcastle United fans saw the result coming out as only 14% wanting Eddie Howe to be sacked during this season, a massive 86% believing he needs to chance of at least the rest of this season before things can then be evaluated by both him and the club.

Anyway, the fact that I am even being asked this question really saddens me.

Should we get rid of Eddie Howe?

That will be the man that brought a trophy to tyneside, less than 12 months ago.

That will be the man whose side surely will be playing last 16 Champions League in a few weeks.

I could only dream of those achievements four years ago. In fact they were impossible to imagine as a possibility.

But sadly, I do understand why this question is now being asked.

This is Newcastle United 2026 and many of us have expectations that we are a team who sit at the top table.

Personally, I don’t think that’s true. I think our players, our finances, our set up, say we are only an upper mid-table team. But that’s an argument for another day.

The question is, should Eddie Howe stay or should he go?

In my opinion, the answer has to be that he stays. Sacking him now would achieve little. Even sacking him if we got beat by Sunderland would just be a knee jerk reaction. Who takes over?

However, even though we all love the guy, the decision as to whether he goes, is one that gets asked in the Summer.

A man with a bag on his head can see the drop off in our performances has been huge. There are many reasons for that. Squad depth, amount of games, players lack of form etc. but Eddie Howe has many questions to answer as well .

For me, the main question is whether Eddie Howe was in charge of summer transfers. If he was, then I’m not sure we can afford to make those mistakes again .

So, if it’s his time to go, it’s his time to go .

I can’t believe I’m actually writing that sentence…but things change very quickly in all walks of life.
