Abhishek Sharma Illness Puts India XI in Doubt for Namibia Clash in T20 World Cup 2026

India’s plans for their second T20 World Cup 2026 match have hit a small bump, with opener Abhishek Sharma battling stomach issues just two days before the game against Namibia on February 12.

Abhishek missed a practice session at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, which has raised concern inside the team camp. The management is still hopeful, but his fitness remains uncertain so close to match day.

“Abhi has still got a few issues with his tummy, but we are hopeful he will be available for the game in two days time,” a team official said, underlining cautious optimism.

If Abhishek is ruled out, Sanju Samson is the most straightforward option to open the batting. The move would not be risk-free, as Samson struggled for runs in the recent series against South Africa.

Another option being discussed is Washington Sundar, who offers flexibility with both bat and ball. Sundar has just returned to training after an injury layoff, and his inclusion could help balance the side if India want extra bowling depth.

India are also watching the fitness of their pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah has recovered from illness and is feeling better, but he has not bowled for around ten days, making his immediate readiness unclear.

“Bumrah has been off 10 days without bowling, but he’s feeling a lot better and moving a lot better,” the official added.

If Bumrah is declared fit, Mohammed Siraj could make way despite taking three wickets against the USA. Within the team setup, Siraj is currently seen as the third-choice seamer, which could go against him when final decisions are made.

The Indian think tank now faces a wait-and-watch situation. Abhishek’s recovery will shape the opening combination, while Bumrah’s readiness could influence the entire bowling attack.

With a tight tournament schedule, India are keen to avoid unnecessary risks. The final XI for the Namibia match is likely to be decided only after the next training session.
