Tearaway fast bowler Mohd Shami could once again find himself in the thick of action when the selectors meet to pick the squads for the upcoming Tests and possibly the ODI series, board sources told CricBlogger.
It is understood that one of the selectors has been given a mandate to fast-track Shami’s comeback. Any resistance from the team management — including head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar — could be overruled in light of India’s recent poor trajectory in Test cricket.
Sources added that Shami’s consistent participation in domestic cricket for Bengal, coupled with some heartening performances, reflects his strong desire to return to the national side. It is also understood that he may have received a tacit assurance from the selection committee to maintain consistency and fitness in order to earn a recall.
Fitness concerns were reportedly the primary reason behind his prolonged absence from the Indian team. It has also been learnt that Shami was not among Gambhir’s preferred options earlier due to concerns over long-term durability.
However, with the situation now looking brighter for Shami, selectors are believed to be working on a phased plan to reintroduce him into the team, possibly beginning with one format.
It is worth noting that Shami enjoyed a stellar run in the 2023 ODI World Cup at home, where he emerged as one of the tournament’s leading wicket-takers. Since then, recurring injuries have kept him in and out of the Indian side.
