After beating Nepal by four runs in their opening game of the T20 World Cup, England face Scotland in Kolkata hours before the nations’ rugby teams meet in the Six Nations in Edinburgh.
The sense of occasion is not lost on England’s Phil Salt, who says he knows several opposition players looking forward to a “special” game.
“An opportunity to upset England is most Scotsmans’ dream,” Salt acknowledged, with his team huge favourites to prevail.
“That being said, it’s another game of cricket at this World Cup, and we’ve got to bring the best version of ourselves.”
Scotland captain Richie Berrington led his side to a 73-run win over Italy in their tournament opener, but seamer Brad Wheal expects there to be nerves in a must-win match for the teams’ prospects.
“We embrace that as sportsmen,” said Wheal. “Our job is to perform under pressure. It’s a pretty cool day for everyone.
“I think it’s the Calcutta Cup they compete for in rugby and we’re playing in Kolkata [formerly Calcutta] for the cricket, so that’s quite a coincidence.
“It’s a big day for Scottish sport and a massive opportunity for both teams to get a big win. Hopefully we can do the job.
“These teams that don’t always get these opportunities to play against the so-called bigger nations have the chance to really show the world what they can do.”
Scotland were on course for an upset against England at the 2024 T20 World Cup until rain caused the match to be abandoned.
England were less fortunate in 2018, when Scotland sprang a surprise for their first win in the fixture in a One-Day International in Edinburgh.

England vs Scotland: T20 World Cup prediction
England should win comfortably but expect a motivated Scotland side to resemble smaller underdogs than the prices might suggest.
The match could be a high-scoring one to potentially suit the likes of George Munsey and Michael Jones, who formed an unbroken partnership of 90 in that contest in 2024.
