Allan Border Demands Demolition of The Gabba For Olympics 2032

In a bold move, former Australia captain Allan Border has called for the demolition of The Gabba, Brisbane’s iconic cricket ground, and the construction of a brand-new stadium from scratch. Border’s proposal comes amidst growing concerns over the venue’s future and its ability to host major sporting events, including the 2032 Olympics.

The Gabba’s Uncertain Future

The Gabba, a fortress for the Australian cricket team, has been at the center of a heated debate. In January 2021, India achieved an unforgettable victory at the venue, completing a 2-1 series win in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. However, the Queensland government recently abandoned a $2.7 billion plan to demolish and rebuild the stadium for the 2032 Olympics. Instead, they have opted to invest in upgrading the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre (QSAC), Suncorp Stadium, and The Gabba itself.

Border’s vision for the future of cricket in Brisbane is clear: “I’d be knocking down the Gabba and building a new venue from scratch at Victoria Park. A brand new 60,000-seat stadium suits rugby, cricket, Aussie rules, and the Olympics, and the Gabba becomes housing.”

The former captain’s proposal also includes a $3.4 billion plan to construct a new oval stadium at Victoria Park, which was rejected by the Queensland government after an independent review. The uncertainty surrounding The Gabba has led to concerns that Brisbane may be absent from Australia’s schedule of hosting Test matches for the next seven years.

Implications for Cricket Australia

The uncertainty surrounding The Gabba’s future has left Cricket Australia anxious about the prospects of hosting cricket in Brisbane. Former Australia wicketkeeper-batter Ian Healy expressed his concerns, stating, “It’s frustrating Cricket Australia because they just can’t talk to either side of our government because our state is shut down until after the election (on October 26). It’s a bit scary for our stakeholders, Cricket Australia is quite anxious about the future of Brisbane cricket.”

The third Test of this year’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy between Australia and India is scheduled to be held at The Gabba from December 14-18. However, the venue’s long-term future remains uncertain, with Healy noting, “So, let’s hope we get our wicket front and centre, and Australia gets some victories.”

As the debate over The Gabba’s future continues, the Queensland government faces a crucial decision that will shape the landscape of sports in Brisbane. With the 2032 Olympics on the horizon, the need for a modern, multi-purpose stadium is evident. Allan Border’s proposal for a new 60,000-seat stadium at Victoria Park presents an intriguing alternative that could cater to various sports and provide a lasting legacy for the city.
