Defending 196 for 6, the Caribbean side held their nerve and bowled England out for 166 in 19 overs to stay on top of the group table.

England struck early after putting West Indies in to bat. Jofra Archer and Sam Curran reduced them to 8 for 2, putting pressure on the power-hitters.

Shimron Hetmyer scored 23 and Roston Chase made 34 as the pair steadied the innings against England’s spinners. They rebuilt patiently before the big hits arrived.

Sherfane Rutherford then turned the match on its head. He smashed 76 off 42 balls, hitting 2 fours and 7 massive sixes to light up Wankhede.

Jason Holder added a quick 33 at the end. West Indies plundered 68 runs in the last five overs to finish with a strong total of 196 for 6.

Adil Rashid was England’s best bowler with 2 for 16, while Jamie Overton took 2 for 38. But the late assault left them with too much to chase.

England’s reply began in stunning fashion. Phil Salt hammered 24 runs off the very first over, putting the West Indies bowlers under early pressure.

The momentum shifted quickly once spinner Gudakesh Motie came into the attack. He dismissed Salt, Tom Banton and Jacob Bethell, finishing with 3 for 24.

Roston Chase added to England’s troubles by removing Will Jacks and Jos Buttler. The spin duo squeezed the middle overs tightly.

Akeal Hosein also bowled a disciplined spell as the three spinners slowed the scoring rate and forced risky shots from the batters.

Sam Curran fought till the end and stayed unbeaten on 23, but wickets kept falling at the other end as England were bowled out in the 19th over.

This win strengthens West Indies’ position at the top of Group C. England, meanwhile, will need a quick comeback to keep their campaign alive.
