Position Summary
The Director of Racquets (DOR) is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and strategic direction of Northmoor Country Club’s racquet sports programs, including tennis, platform tennis, and pickleball. This role oversees all programming, instruction, staff leadership, facilities, and financial performance associated with the racquets department, while delivering a consistently exceptional member
and guest experience.
The DOR balances hands-on court involvement with administrative and operational responsibilities. Court time is primarily dedicated to private and group instruction, clinics, member engagement, and other racquets-related duties as directed by the General Manager/COO.
Core Responsibilities
Member Experience & Program Leadership:
- Deliver a consistently exceptional, safe, and engaging racquets experience for members and guests of all ages and skill levels.
- Maintain a highly visible presence, demonstrating strong leadership, professionalism, and clear communication with both members and staff.
- Create, implement, and continuously enhance social, instructional, and competitive programming across tennis, platform tennis, and pickleball.
- Develop and promote an annual racquets calendar, ensuring programs and events are communicated and marketed well in advance.
- Provide members of all levels with high-quality instruction and educational opportunities that encourage broad-based participation.
- Attend home and away matches when possible to better understand member skill levels and engagement.
Instruction & On-Court Engagement
- Provide private and group lessons, clinics, drills, exhibitions, camps, and other instructional offerings in tennis, platform tennis, and pickleball.
- Teach a complimentary 30-minute promotional lesson for onboarding new members.
- Devote reasonable time playing with members as needed (not considered formal lessons), inclusive of staff participation.
- Oversee staff-led lessons and clinics to ensure consistency, quality, and adherence to Club standards.
Staff Leadership & Human Resources
- Lead, select, hire, train, coach, and develop all racquets department staff, including tennis, platform tennis, and pickleball professionals.
- Conduct annual performance evaluations, providing constructive feedback and fostering professional and personal growth.
- Work with Human Resources to maintain updated job descriptions and ensure compliance with all HR policies and procedures.
- Promote a positive, accountable, and service-oriented team culture.
Financial & Administrative Management
- Manage the department’s annual operating budget, capital planning, monthly financial performance, and weekly payroll in coordination with the Financial Controller.
- Collaborate with the General Manager/COO to develop future operating and capital budgets addressing maintenance needs and strategic investments informed by industry trends.
- Oversee all racquets-related revenue streams, including lessons, guest fees, pro shop sales, and ancillary income.
- Ensure accurate reporting, fiscal responsibility, and operations within approved budget guidelines.
Programming, Communication & Marketing
- Provide clear, consistent, and timely communication to members regarding schedules, programming, events, and racquet sports news.
- Produce a monthly racquets department newsletter highlighting upcoming programs, events, and key updates.
- Develop programming content, brochures, and promotional media to increase visibility and participation.
- Ensure an effective online sign-up system is in place for events, socials, and group instruction (excluding private lessons).
League Play & Competitive Teams
- Coordinate Northmoor’s participation in inter-club leagues and external racquet organizations.
- Work with head professionals to assess membership interest in team play and organize all teams accordingly.
- Collaborate with team captains on lineups, scheduling, availability, and match logistics.
- Draft Racquets Committee agendas in coordination with the Committee Chair and attend all relevant staff, committee, and subcommittee meetings.
Facilities, Equipment & Pro Shop Operations
- Ensure courts, patios, decks, viewing areas, and surrounding spaces are clean, safe, well-stocked, and maintained to the highest standards.
- Oversee court conditions and maintenance, implementing systems to monitor and communicate court playability to members.
- Coordinate maintenance and housekeeping needs and advise the Chief Engineer on required repairs or equipment upgrades.
- Maintain a well-stocked pro shop offering tennis, platform tennis, and pickleball equipment and apparel.
- Ensure a reliable, timely stringing service and remain knowledgeable in current racquet sports equipment and apparel technologies to support members and drive sales.
Governance & Policy Oversight
- Regularly review and update tennis, platform tennis, and pickleball handbooks to ensure relevance and alignment with Club standards.
- In conjunction with the Racquets Committee, administer and enforce Club policies, procedures, and regulations governing racquets facilities, equipment, and use.
