David Finlay is officially back on the market — and that instantly puts both WWE and AEW on notice.
The New Japan Pro-Wrestling standout’s contract has expired, according to Fightful Select, making him a free agent at a time when major North American promotions are always looking to add proven talent. While NJPW is reportedly working to re-sign him, Finlay is now free to explore his options. And those options are interesting.
It was previously confirmed that WWE and Finlay have held talks amid company interest. With his brother and father already having strong ties to WWE, many fans have long assumed it would only be a matter of time before Finlay made the jump. Now that his contract has officially expired, that possibility becomes far more real.
AEW is also part of the conversation. Clark Connors has been widely speculated to be signed with AEW — even though no formal announcement has been made — and that has led to natural speculation that Finlay could follow, potentially inserting more of the War Dogs presence into the promotion.
This situation didn’t come out of nowhere. It was reported back in December that Finlay was expected to explore opportunities in North America once his NJPW deal wrapped up. That timeline has now arrived.
Despite the outside interest, NJPW is not letting him walk without a fight. The company is said to be actively attempting to bring the fourth-generation star back under contract. For now, Finlay’s free agency is official — and that means the door is open.
