Germany Make Historic Rugby Statement in Nairobi

History was made at the SVNS 2 in Nairobi, Kenya. Germany make a historic rugby statement with an unbeaten Day Two in Nairobi to be crowned Men’s Champions and join Argentina’s Women as the champions of the first leg of the three tournament competition.

Day Two of the tournament in Nairobi began with Kenya and the USA leading. However, Germany completed a shock upset victory over the USA Men’s Eagles 7’s to turn the tournament on its head. Germany backed-up the victory over the Eagles with a win over Belgium and the USA Eagles helped Germany win as they downed Kenya.

The German victory over the USA featured two tries to Felix Hufnagel and a total of four unanswered tries as the USA were left shocked and beaten, falling to a 28-7 defeat. Jack Wendling scored late for some respectability for the Eagles.

Germany’s triumph over Belgium featured a critical try-saving tackle from Tim Lichtenburg. In combination with tries to Niklas Koch and Jakob Dipper, Germany had enough to complete victory. Kenya then fell 21-5 against the USA to confirm Germany as champions of Nairobi.

The USA had a solid tournament overall. It started with a 40-0 win over Belgium. David Still, Pita Vi (2), Lucas Lacamp, Aaron Cummings, and Steve Tomasin all scored tries. The Eagles then won the battle of the birds by defeating Uruguay 17-14 with tries scored by Stil, Vi and Jacob Broselle.

The USA built on the win over Los Teros 7’s by putting on a solid showing against Canada. The 41-7 victory came with four tries by Lucas Lacamp  while Still, Vi and Adam Channel also each scored. Canada’s try was scored by Demetri Patterson.

Canada finishged the tournament in 6th position and Uruguay in 4th. Uruguay won the match between the teams. The 43-12 result saw scintillating rugby played by Uruguay. Ignacio Rodriguez scored two tries while Dante Soto, Juan Manuel Tafernaberry, Alfonso Vidal, Mauricio Maly and Joaquín Cat also touched down. Patterson and Adam Doane scored for the Canadians.

The SVNS 2 continues in South America in March. Montevideo, Uruguay will play host to the second leg on March 21-22 while São Paulo, Brazil will be the setting for the third, and final, leg on March 28-29.
