New Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken has done an impressive job thus far filling out his coaching staff to help shape the team in his image. His pull has been noticeable, as he has been able to bring a few coaches from the Baltimore Ravens with him when many would have assumed they would all follow John Harbaugh to the New York Giants instead.
With Monken’s acumen being on the offensive side of the ball and former defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz no longer in the picture, there is going to be some turnover with the leadership on defense. Monken has to make sure the team doesn’t miss a beat, which is why one of their best coaches is getting a promotion into a larger role with the defense. ESPN’s Daniel Oyefusi shared on X that cornerbacks coach Brandon Lynch is getting a promotion.
He’ll now be in charge of all the defensive backs, as well as serving as the defensive passing game specialist.
“The Browns have promoted Brandon Lynch from cornerbacks coach to DBs coach/pass game specialist, as [Jonathan Jones] reported. Lynch has done good work with Cleveland’s CBs and now gets a new title,” Oyefusi posted on X.

Cleveland’s corners were a strong aspect of the defense last season and will return Denzel Ward, Tyson Campbell, and Myles Harden next season. Campbell and Harden are both young and trending up, and it will be exciting to see what the next step in their development looks like.
One area where Cleveland could improve on defense is its turnover department. This team did a great job pressuring the quarterback this past season with 53 sacks, but it would help the offense out if they could put them in better positions more often.
Cleveland registered 11 interceptions in 2025, and only two of those came from the cornerbacks. Linebackers Carson Schwesinger and free agent Devin Bush had five of those picks, so hopefully Lynch can coach this secondary up even more to take the ball away.
All in all, it’s a great move to give Lynch more control on defense. Perhaps he’ll eventually keep moving up the ranks and become defensive coordinator to fill the big shoes left behind by Jim Schwartz.
