Update On WWE’s Contact With David Finlay Amid Free Agency

David Finlay is officially a free agent. His contract with New Japan Pro-Wrestling expired earlier this month. This has intensified rumors that suggest he might go to the WWE next.

Since he is a fourth-generation wrestler and the son of WWE veteran Fit Finlay, many people thought WWE could be his next stop. AEW has also been mooted as a possibility.

However, recent reports say that while David Finlay has been in contact with WWE, nothing serious is happening currently.

David Finlay Not Currently Factored Into WWE Creative Plans

According to Fightful Select, Finlay and WWE did speak at one point. But at the moment, he is not part of any creative plans. That means WWE isn’t building storylines or making room on the roster for him right now. The two sides have talked before, but there hasn’t been any new progress lately.

“Sources in WWE have said that while there has been contact between David Finlay and WWE, he isn’t factored into creative plans at the moment,” the report states.

Meanwhile, NJPW is reportedly working hard to bring Finlay back. That seems to be the most active part of his situation at the moment. The company clearly values him, especially after the big role he played in changing its faction scene.

Finlay had a major run in NJPW. In March 2023, he became the fifth leader of Bullet Club. He reshaped the group by focusing on the tougher “War Dogs” unit.

In early 2026, he helped end the 13-year run of Bullet Club and launched a new group called Unbound Co., combining War Dogs with other wrestlers. That decision officially closed the chapter on one of wrestling’s most famous factions and showed how important Finlay had become to NJPW’s direction.

He wrestled his last contracted match in Japan on February 11, 2026, at The New Beginning in Osaka, where he lost to Callum Newman.

Finlay and WWE have talked before, and there was some level of interest. But WWE isn’t moving toward signing him anytime soon. The door isn’t closed, it’s just not fully open either.
