“You can’t take our country — and you can’t take our game,” Trudeau wrote on social media when Team Canada emerged victorious in last year’s tournament. That contest took place as Trump threatened to levy punishing tariffs on the country, mused about Canada becoming America’s 51st state and suggested that NHL great Wayne Gretzky could become prime minister.

But the U.S. didn’t forget that sting of defeat — or Trudeau’s boasting.
After Team USA beat Canada 2-1 in overtime at the 2026 Milano Cortina Games on Sunday, the official White House dusted off Trudeau’s tweet and shared an image of a bald eagle flattening a Canadian goose.

FBI Director Kash Patel was in attendance, guzzling beers with the players in their dressing room after their victory.
Early Monday morning, Trump’s celebration of the gold medal win in men’s hockey continued with another posting that showed an AI version of the president, in a suit, besting members of Team Canada on the ice.
On X, where the minute-long video racked up more than 2.1 million views, Kari Lake, the administration’s senior advisor for the United States Agency for Global Media, re-posted the clip, declaring, “Trump, the enforcer!”

Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III also re-shared Trudeau’s old message alongside a picture of himself with the American flag. “We took your game,” he wrote.
Elsewhere, Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy published multiple images of Canadian forward Nathan MacKinnon missing an open net opportunity against Team USA netminder Connor Hellebuyck.
“Anybody who has videos of Canada’s hopes and dreams being shattered feel free to send along,” Portnoy wrote alongside a video of dejected Canadian fans.

The crowing came after the White House also celebrated Team USA’s win over Canada in women’s hockey.
“WE ARE SO BACK,” read an X post from the official account of the Trump administration following America’s 2-1 win Thursday night. “RED, WHITE, & BLUE RUNNING THROUGH OUR VEINS.”
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mark Carney, who some netizens blamed for the women’s loss to Team USA in their gold medal matchup, said he “could not be more proud” of the country’s efforts at this year’s games.
“You’re coming home with 21 hard-fought Olympic medals. Though what Canadians will remember most is how you wore the Maple Leaf: with pride, with grit, and with determination,” he wrote.
On his X account, where his original cocky tweet still remains pinned at the top of his page, Trudeau was quiet about the loss.

‘I love the USA’
In addition to beating America in last year’s 4 Nations Face-Off, Canada bested the U.S. for Olympic gold in 2002 and 2010. Team Canada also won gold at the 2014 Games in Sochi.
But that winning streak came to a halt when New Jersey Devils forward Jack Hughes scored 1:41 into overtime on Sunday, giving the U.S. its first gold medal win since the 1980 Lake Placid Games.
“This is all about our country right now. I love the USA,” Hughes said in an interview after scoring the goal. “I’m so proud to be American today. I love my country, I love my teammates. That’s American hockey right there. That’s a great Canadian team, but this means so much. We are such a team.”
Hughes, who is dating Canadian pop star Tate McRae, added, “The USA brotherhood in this team is so strong, so much support from ex-players. I cannot believe this. It could have gone either way tonight.”

Hughes’ goal prompted no shortage of jokes on social media.
“Tate McRae might have to break up with Jack Hughes if she wants to ever be allowed in her country again,” one person quipped, while another devastated fan wrote, “I hope Tate McRae breaks up with him.”
‘We’re all proud Americans’
“It feels like it’s been too long,” Toronto Maple Leafs superstar Auston Matthews, who captained Team USA, added (via the New York Times). “We’re all proud Americans, obviously. This is a huge moment for us, a huge moment for the United States. (Trump) called. Just congratulated us. … It’s an honour to wear this jersey and represent the U.S. To go home with a gold medal, you know how much that means to guys in this room, to people watching and rooting us on, too.”

Heading into Sunday’s game, Brady Tkachuk, who plays for the Ottawa Senators, said that he despised Team Canada.
“There’s hatred there,” Tkachuk told ESPN. “I mean, they’ve been the top dog … So it’s going to be a game where I think a lot of guys could say, this is the biggest game that they’ve ever played in.”
The loss stung Team Canada. Although Hellebuyck was Herculean, stopping 41 of 42 shots on goal, after the game, MacKinnon went viral for his nonplussed reaction when he was videoed receiving his silver medal and an Olympic stuffie.
“You be the judge of who was the better team today,” MacKinnon said post-game, via the Canadian Press.
That comment sparked another round of jeers.
“It’s called choking under pressure,” one person captioned a pic of MacKinnon missing his open-net chance, with another adding, “Imagine being the man who missed an open net and gave up the winning goal on defence, and saying this.”
