Tyra Mae Steele — known to the world as Olympic gold medalist Tamyra Mensah-Stock — is pulling back the curtain on the moment WWE came calling.
Steele made history at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, winning gold at 68 kilograms and becoming the first Black woman to capture freestyle wrestling gold. Shortly after that milestone victory, her phone rang — and the voice on the other end was none other than Vince McMahon.
While appearing on Wrestling Syndicate, Steele played the actual audio message McMahon left her after her Olympic triumph. The message was direct and unmistakable.
“This is Vince McMahon. Congratulations on your victory. We would love to be able to talk to you about joining us here at WWE. So give us a call back whenever you can.”
The call came during a whirlwind period for Steele. Following her Olympic win, she became a national star, appeared in multiple media outlets, and even made a cameo appearance at WWE SummerSlam in 2021. At the time, she was still riding the wave of her historic accomplishment.
Nearly two years later, in May 2023, she officially signed with WWE, transitioning from Olympic freestyle wrestling to sports entertainment under the ring name Tyra Mae Steele.
