Most-Talked-About Maple Leaf Might Not Get Moved After All

For the past few months, the Toronto Maple Leafs have had their name circulating around the rumour mill. With how the season has gone, most NHL insiders and analysts have suggested they could look to sell at the trade deadline.

One player in particular who has been involved in trade rumours is Bobby McMann. He has been viewed as their most valuable trade asset. However, over the last few days, it appears things may be shifting, and McMann might not be dealt after all.

McMann May Not Be Signed by the Maple Leafs

McMann’s future largely depends on how the Maple Leafs perform leading up to the trade deadline. If things go south, there is a strong chance he gets moved along with a handful of others. However, if they stay in the mix and remain close to a playoff spot, they could choose to keep him as their own rental. Then they could push for a wild-card position.

The Leafs are reportedly not ready to make a decision yet. TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reported, “It’s amazing how many teams telling me in last 24 hours how important next few games are through the weekend before firming up deadline plans. Not a lot of leeway there.” Toronto could be among those clubs waiting.

If the Leafs aren’t seller, they’ll likely keep the forward. Alternatively, if he’s willing to take a haircut on his ask, he could get signed to an extension.

McMann has been open about his love for Toronto and his desire to stay and be part of this team. It would not be surprising to see them seriously consider keeping him for what he brings. He can slide into the top six and score 20 to 25 goals in a season. He is the type of player you move only if you absolutely have to. The ideal scenario would be holding onto him for a playoff push. Then they could work toward a new deal in the offseason.

Unfortunately, that does not always matter when a team is struggling and considering change. In McMann’s case, though, he is such a useful player that all 31 other NHL teams would likely have interest. That is not an asset the Maple Leafs want to give up lightly. But if a retool is the direction they choose, they would need to think it through.
