The Board of Control for Cricket in India is set to release the IPL 2026 schedule in two parts. The move comes due to upcoming Assembly Elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Assam during the tournament window.
The elections are expected to overlap with the IPL season. State security forces will be busy with polling duties, making it tough to provide protection at major venues like Eden Gardens and MA Chidambaram Stadium.
As per reports, the first phase of the schedule could be announced by late February 2026. It is likely to include the first 20 to 25 matches of the season.
The second phase will be finalised around mid-March 2026. This will happen once the Election Commission of India confirms the exact polling and counting dates.
The IPL 2026 season is expected to begin on March 26 or 27. The final is tentatively scheduled for May 31, 2026, keeping the usual two-month window in mind.
Because of security concerns, some teams may have to shift their home games. Franchises like Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings could move matches to cities such as Cuttack or Ranchi if needed.
The phased release also helps stadium staff. Grounds recently used for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which ends on March 8, will need time to prepare fresh pitches and change branding for the IPL.
Franchises and broadcasters are already working with the early details. They are planning marketing campaigns and team logistics for the opening matches, while staying flexible for the second half of the season.
Broadcasters like JioStar have backed the decision. They believe national security and player safety must come first during the election period.
The BCCI’s careful approach aims to avoid last-minute changes. With elections and a major ICC event in the same window, planning ahead could help ensure a smooth IPL season for fans and players alike.
