Conor Benn names first opponent since Eddie Hearn exit

Conor Benn has revealed his first opponent since leaving Eddie Hearn for Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing.

Benn shocked the boxing world by ending his 10-year deal with Hearn’s Matchroom and inking a one-fight, $15m deal with White.

‘The Destroyer’ was expected to headline an inaugural UK Zuffa show, but will instead return on the undercard of Tyson Fury vs Arslanbek Makhmudov on April 11 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Benn will tackle former two-time super lightweight world champion, Regis Prograis.

Fury-Makhmudov headlines a Ring card, the organisation owned by Turki Alalshikh – the Saudi Arabian boxing chief who also has an extensive involvement in Zuffa.

Benn’s last two bouts against Chris Eubank Jr were at middleweight, but he is expected to return to welterweight for this clash with Prograis.

“April 11th can’t come soon enough, returning to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium again where I made history against Eubank Jr means everything to me,” the 29-year-old said.

“My last fight there showed the world exactly who I am and what I’m about.

“Fighting on the biggest stages, in the biggest shows, I fear no one!”

“I’m fully locked in and ready to deliver another statement performance.”

Benn was out of contract with Hearn’s company, although the Matchroom Chairman has questioned his loyalty after he backed him through two failed drug tests.

The British star tested positive for the banned substance Clomiphene, which postponed a scheduled meeting with Eubank Jr in October 2022.

Hearn continuously supported Benn and claimed he paid him “hundreds of thousands of pounds” with the Essex man embroiled in legal fees.

Benn was later cleared by the National Anti-Doping Panel and went on to gain revenge over Eubank Jr after losing to the Brighton man in April.

“Me personally [I’m] pretty devastated,” the 46-year-old told IFLTV.

“I blame myself, because I forgot it was boxing.

“I just felt that the loyalty that we’ve shown would never ever put us in this position.

“I just felt that I never really needed to push Conor Benn to sign a new contract previously.

“I made a mistake, because I misjudged the character.”
