Tarucas Sink Peñarol in Montevideo

Los Tarucas conquered Montevideo on Friday to start Super Rugby Americas (SRA) 2026 with two victories from two rounds. The Northwestern Argentine franchise were 28-18 winners over Peñarol in the first match of week two.

It was a match featuring five tries, three of which were scored by Los Tarucas. The first score of the match, however, came in the form of a penalty. Man of the match, Ignacio Cerruti slotted three points in the 3rd minute of play.

Uruguayan veteran N8 of Rugby World Cups 2019 and 2023 scored the game’s opening try. He went over from a maul on 11 minutes. It was unconverted. Another player from Rugby World Cup 2019, Matías Orlando, was the next to score. Orlando chased a kick from Mateo Pasquini to score under the posts.

Both teams added a further try each in the second quarter. Los Tarucas scored an impressive try in the left corner after Mateo Pasquini gathered a cross-kick from Cerruti. It culminated with scrum-half Estanislao Pregot scoring in the corner. Peñarol responded through intelligence with Manuel Ardao taking a quick-tap from a penalty and scoring.

Los Tarucas held a 18-15 lead at half-time. It came after Justo Ferrario landed a penalty to close out the half. Ferrario scored a further penalty on 55 minutes but it was the only score of the second-half for the Uruguayans.

Meanwhile, Los Tarucas added ten second-half points to complete a 28-18 victory. Flanker Tomás Dande scored the only try of the half; he did so after an excellent past pass from Matías Orlando.

Los Tucumanos missed out on a fourth try but return home with four competition points. Week three action will see an Argentine derby for Los Tarucas as they play host to Los Dogos while Peñarol be be targeting improvement and a first win of SRA 2026 against Selknam
