Max Boxing – Sub Lead – Remembering a True Champion

Max Boxing – Sub Lead – Remembering a True Champion

On Wednesday, February 25, the boxing world learned of the passing of former featherweight world title contender Ruben Castillo (67-10-2, 35 KOs) after a valiant cancer battle.

Through 79 professional fights, Castillo challenged for a world title 4 times. While he never captured a world championship belt, to say he faced tough competition would be an understatement to say the least. He was competing for world titles in the golden era of featherweights and junior lightweights.

Castillo turned pro in February of 1975 and would go 43-0 in his first 4 years.

Castillo faced outstanding fighters in his title bouts. Ruben faced Julio Caesar Chavez in 1985 for the WBC world super featherweight title. Then, in 1983, he faced Juan Laporte for the WBC featherweight title and Salvador Sanchez for the WBC 126-pound belt. And, in 1980, he faced Alexis Arguello for the WBC super featherweight title. You could not face 4 tougher world title assignments.

Castillo was born in Lubbock, Texas, but was a long-time California resident. Castillo boxed from 1975-1997, recording an impressive 67 wins with 35 KOs over his 22-year career.

Castillo leaves behind a wife and family and a reputation as a great fighter in an era of great fighters.

Rest in peace, champion.
