DraftKings, the prominent Boston-based digital sports entertainment and gaming company, has inched closer to launching its mobile sportsbook in Arkansas following a new licensing approval from state regulators.
The Arkansas Racing Commission has granted the company a license to operate in the state. This move comes through a partnership with Southland Casino Hotel in West Memphis. While the license is a major hurdle cleared, the company still needs final regulatory approval before its sportsbook is officially available for residents.
Once launched, Arkansas will become the 30th U.S. state to offer regulated sports betting through DraftKings. The expansion adds a potential market of over two million adults, meaning the company’s sportsbook will be available to more than half of the total U.S. population.
“We are excited to team up with Southland Casino Hotel to bring our mobile sportsbook to Arkansas,” said Gregory Karamitis, DraftKings’ Executive Vice President. He noted that the company aims to be active in time for “March Madness,” the popular college basketball tournament.
The company will launch its app that will allow users in Arkansas to place various types of bets, including live in-game wagering and “same-game parlays.” To comply with state regulations and promote safety, the platform will also include tools that allow users to track their spending and set personal betting limits.
The partnership follows a trend of national betting operators teaming up with local brick-and-mortar casinos to meet state legal requirements. Southland Casino Hotel, owned by Delaware North, already offers on-site gaming and racing, and this deal allows them to extend their reach to sports fans across the entire state via smartphone.
