Following a fiery exchange on social media, a welterweight unification between Devin Haney and Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero is being negotiated.
WBC champion Haney (33-0, 15 KOs) responded to the rumors on X that he plans to collide with WBA belt holder Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) on May 30 at The Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Haney posted: “My father spoke with Luis (Rolly’s manager). Rumors are true… let’s see if we can get this done inshaAllah.”
Romero and Haney have had a very open spat on social media in the lead-up to this news. When somebody posted “Fight Haney” earlier today, Romero responded: “He likes to sue people when he loses. But I’d knock him out cold. Let’s make it happen.”
“We could’ve made this fight months ago,” Haney replied from his verified X account, “now u desperate..”
Romero replied: “Oh now that I called your bluff, you wanna run away? So much for the big tough guy act. Sign the contract.”
Romero also added: “You say sign the contract more than anyone in boxing. Stop acting like anyone is ducking you. My manager reached out to your dad. Sign the contract.”
“Yeah when a real ‘Contract’ is actually sent dumbass!” Haney fired back. “F** u & ur manager! U made up all these reasons not to fight me so now stand on it! Go find that mandatory.”
“Y’all just got the call,” Romero responded. “May 30th, New York City at the Barclays on Amazon Prime. Ball’s in your court, Ducky.”
Romero comes off an unexpected victory over Ryan Garcia, winning by unanimous decision last May in Times Square. The bout was an unofficial semi-final to face the winner of Haney and Jose Ramirez, who joined the card in New York City. Haney claimed a wide points win, but Garcia didn’t hold up to his end of the bargain.
Haney and Garcia met ahead of Romero’s victory over the latter. Their bitter feud escalated in the lead up to Garcia knocking Haney down multiple times on his way to a unanimous decision victory. However, after Garcia later failed a drug test, the result was changed to a no contest.
Garcia has since become WBC welterweight champion with a commanding points victory against Mario Barrios last month.
