I called Wolff and Brown to try to find out if they understood anything

The seven-time world champion is chasing an eighth title in his second season as a Ferrari driver, but he remains cautious about drawing firm conclusions from winter testing.

In Melbourne, everyone will drop the mask

True glory or just a flash in the pan? Ferrari emerged as the fastest team during winter testing in Bahrain. Charles Leclerc set the overall quickest lap time and also impressed during long runs, showing both strong pace and remarkable consistency. At the end of the test sessions, the Monegasque driver stated that Ferrari had completed everything it needed to evaluate, which naturally raises the question: how much were their rivals holding back?

Lewis Hamilton, speaking in an interview with Corriere della Sera, stressed that the Bahrain results should be treated with caution. “Very little emerged from the tests, everyone was hiding with fuel loads. I call Toto Wolff at Mercedes and Zak Brown at McLaren to try to understand what they have understood, but I don’t get any results,” Hamilton explained.

Indeed, the prevailing trend among the top Formula 1 teams has been to downplay expectations — at least publicly — often positioning themselves as the fourth-fastest force in order to shift attention elsewhere. It is a familiar psychological game in modern Formula 1, where data is closely guarded and performance is rarely revealed before the first race weekend.

Despite the uncertainty, Lewis Hamilton remains convinced that the challenges faced in 2025 have ultimately strengthened Ferrari as an organisation. According to the British driver, the foundations are now in place to end the team’s title drought and mount a serious championship campaign.

“After what we went through last year, we can face any situation. This team has everything it needs to win, we have to finish the job together with the fans. It’s easier said than done, but I came to Ferrari because I believed in it and I still believe in it,” he said.

All eyes now turn to Melbourne, where the true competitive order will finally begin to emerge. Pre-season testing may have been a strategic game of hide and seek, but at the Australian Grand Prix the stopwatch will tell the real story — and Ferrari, with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc at the wheel, intends to be at the front of it.
