Most of the last many years, these two would have been seeded in a 32-seed draw. These days, both are outside the seeding.
They are former junior rivals; their semifinal in the 2016 Wimbledon junior event, won by Shapovalov on his way to the title, was a mastery of one-handed backhands, serve-volley and chip and charge that was outstandingly precious for a couple of teens.
