News and notes from Inside IU basketball with Darian DeVries – Inside the Hall

Inside IU basketball with Darian DeVries returned on Monday night from Hoosier Hank’s in Bloomington for what is likely to be the final in-person radio show of the season.

The first-year IU coach sat with the voice of the Hoosiers, Don Fischer, ahead of Indiana’s final week of the regular season.

There was no player guest as the new executive director of basketball, Ryan Carr, joined Fisher in the final segment.

Here’s a recap of what DeVries and Carr had to say:

• DeVries on the Northwestern loss last week: “I could tell in our locker room that our guys were really hurt.”

• DeVries believes his team “left it all out there” and played with urgency in Sunday’s loss to Michigan State.

• DeVries said the late-shot clock shots Michigan State made were demoralizing and their nine offensive rebounds were deflating.

• DeVries said the team couldn’t sustain any momentum, which ultimately led to its demise.

• On Sam Alexis’ effort on Sunday: “He gave us really good physicality… he was able to keep us at arm’s reach.’

• On Lamar Wilkerson and Tucker DeVries: “Both of those guys are leaving everything out there; seniors who want to end their careers on a high note.”

• DeVries: “We still have opportunities in front of us.” The Hoosiers will finish the regular season this week with games against Minnesota and Ohio State.

• DeVries on the six seniors: “I’m incredibly grateful for this group. They’ve been a really fun group to be around.” Says he looks forward to honoring them on Wednesday night.

• DeVries said the seniors will be honored 15 minutes before the game against Minnesota, which begins at 6:30 p.m. ET.

• DeVries said that Wilkerson and Tayton Conerway became roommates in the spring and have become close.

• DeVries on Minnesota: “They are a really good team, but they’re just not deep.” Says they’re basically playing six guys right now.

• More on Minnesota. “All guys really play into their roles.” DeVries added that Minnesota will try to take advantage of mismatches.

• DeVries said he was Minnesota head coach Nico Medved’s successor at Drake and has known him for a while.

• DeVries says he’s “excited” about hiring Ryan Carr as the team’s executive director of basketball.

• DeVries on Carr: “He’s going to be a huge addition for us and he’s got incredible experience. He’s one of those guys who’s so well-trusted in the profession.”

• Carr, a 1996 graduate of Indiana, calls his journey surreal. Carr said he was cut from his high school basketball team, but became a manager.

• Carr said Bob Knight was the only coach to respond to his letter asking to be a manager at Indiana.

• Carr said many of the agents are the same in both college and pro levels. He added that his phone has been ringing like crazy since getting the job.

• Carr called the Pacers’ run to the NBA Finals in 2025 a “special year.”

• Carr said he has a blueprint for what his role will look like at Indiana, but is still getting acclimated because “it’s my second day on the job.”

• Carr said he and athletic director Scott Dolson have a long-standing relationship and it was a big reason he came back.

• Carr wrapped the interview, saying, “It’s a privilege to be here.”
