Michael Carrick will hope to continue his fine start to life as caretaker head coach of Manchester United when they visit Newcastle United on Wednesday night.

The Englishman – who was born in the North East – has overseen six wins and a draw from his seven matches since taking charge of United in January, a run which includes victories against Manchester City, Arsenal, and Tottenham Hotspur.

Last time out the Red Devils defeated Crystal Palace 2-1 at Old Trafford, and Carrick will hope to see them pick up another three points when they visit St. James’ Park on Wednesday.

Ahead of that game, it has emerged that Man United are set to be dealt a blow in their pursuit of a Newcastle star.

According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle remain adamant that defender Malick Thiaw is not for sale, despite interest from Manchester United and Liverpool.

The Germany defender joined the Magpies from Serie A giants AC Milan last summer and is enjoying an impressive first season in England.

In total the centre-back has more than 40 appearances for Eddie Howe’s side in all competitions, helping them to navigate a passage to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

As well as his defensive capabilities, Thiaw has also contributed in an attacking sense, scoring four times in the Premier League so far this term.

Such is his importance to Howe’s side, the report claims that the Magpies have no intention of selling the player any time soon.

Thiaw is under contract at St. James’ Park until 2029, having penned a long-term deal with Newcastle when joining the club for a fee of around £35 million last summer.

The player himself is said to be happy at his current club, making a move even more unlikely.
