Big E may still be part of WWE programming, but the former WWE Champion says a full-time commentary job isn’t something he’s eager to jump into right now.
Speaking with The Takedown on Sports Illustrated, Big E addressed the growing fan support for him to take a weekly role behind the broadcast desk. While the idea has come up internally within WWE, he made it clear that the demanding travel schedule tied to the position is a major factor in his hesitation.
Big E admitted the opportunity has been discussed, but he isn’t ready to return to the nonstop travel that comes with being part of WWE’s weekly touring schedule.
“It’s possible. I think it would have to depend. I will say, I think the idea of being on the road every single week for an extended period of time is something that I’m just not really open to doing right now. God bless the amount of people who’ve come to me—or even tweeted at WWE—‘Get him on commentary. He deserves to be on commentary.’”
Despite turning down the idea for now, Big E revealed that several people within WWE have supported the idea of him moving into a commentary role, including longtime announcer Michael Cole.
“Look, I’ve been approached multiple times by people within the company, people who’ve gone to bat for me. Michael Cole has definitely been someone in my corner, and I’m very thankful for all the lovely things he’s said about me.”
For Big E, the biggest issue comes down to lifestyle. After spending years traveling constantly during his in-ring career, he’s grown to appreciate life away from WWE’s intense touring schedule.
“But man, when you’re on that WWE hamster wheel—when you’re on the road every single week—I tell people all the time, when I first started on the road, we would do five shows a week, every single week. I was happy to do it. We were getting paid per show. Being young, being 26 when I first got called up, I wanted to be on every show. I loved the road. I was gung-ho about it.”
Big E explained that once he stepped away from the grind, he quickly realized how much he valued the stability and time away from the road.
“But once you’re able to get off that hamster wheel and you realize, man, I have my weekends back again—or when I first started dating Kristen, my fiancée, I was able to be out for a chunk of 10 days or two weeks—and man, life is good out here. Life is good off the grind. Not living the circus life.”
Although he may not want a full-time commentary position, Big E said he’s grateful for the opportunity to remain connected to WWE through his appearances on premium live event pre-shows and post-shows.
“I am so grateful for this opportunity to be a part of the pre-shows and post-shows for the PLEs. I love that it’s allowed me to still stay around the locker room, to see the boys and the girls. I also love being a supportive voice for so many of the young talent coming up.”
Big E has remained a respected figure backstage since stepping away from in-ring competition, and his presence around WWE programming continues to draw strong support from both fans and talent.
