Cana-Chilean Alejandro Tabilo is the only Canadian in action on the men’s side, as Félix Auger-Aliassime awaits a second-round clash with Gaël Monfils that hopefully won’t be as tetchy as their meeting in Laver Cup in Vancouver some years ago.
Tabilo plays young and rising Spanish player Rafael Jodar, who had intended to go to play college this this year but, as the top 100 looms, probably made a good call to go it as a full-time pro.
Beyond that, with no seeds in action a lot of the matches may well mean some dogfights.
Arthur Cazaux, who hasn’t played since retiring in the second round of qualifying in Brisbane, was in the draw. But he’s a late scratch – replaced by lucky loser Vit Kopriva, the No. 1 seed in qualifying.
