Lions squad and staff safely back in England

The England Lions squad and staff have returned to the United Kingdom after the remainder of their limited overs series against Pakistan Shaheens in the United Arab Emirates was cancelled.

England’s development side, coached by Andrew Flintoff, had been based in Abu Dhabi for the 50 over leg of the white ball tour. The second fixture was due to take place on Sunday before being called off following missile strikes across the Middle East.

Iran launched attacks across the region, including in the United Arab Emirates, in response to American and Israeli strikes on its territory.

A group of 25 players and coaches departed Abu Dhabi on a commercial flight on Tuesday. The England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed their safe arrival in the United Kingdom.

“We are grateful to all those who provided assistance and advice while the squad were in Abu Dhabi, and who helped ensure their safe return,” the ECB said in a statement.

“Our thoughts are with all those currently still in the Gulf who are seeking to return to the UK, and we hope they are able to get home soon.”

While many of the Iranian attacks were intercepted, damage was reported to prominent sites in the United Arab Emirates, including the Fairmont The Palm hotel in the Palm Jumeirah area and the Burj Al Arab hotel. Dubai International Airport and Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi were also affected.

The Pakistan Cricket Board confirmed that the decision to abandon the series was taken jointly.

“The safety, security and wellbeing of the players and support staff remain the highest priority for the PCB,” the board said.

“The PCB remains in constant contact with the team management and players to ensure appropriate measures are in place to bring team back to Pakistan.”

England had won the three match T20 series 3 -0 and led the five match 50 over series 1-0 at the time of cancellation.

Nottinghamshire have also cancelled a pre-season tour to the United Arab Emirates that had been scheduled to begin on Monday.
