Brian James Leaves Creative» TWNP-Wrestling News

Oh, you didn’t know? Road Dogg Jesse James departs WWE after ten years on the Creative Team and other backstage roles. The WWE Hall of Famer has been the lead writer for SmackDown on and off since 2019. However, The New Age Outlaw has received a ton of backlash from the WWE Universe over the past year. As the Road to WrestleMania gets rockier, this creative shakeup will certainly add more roadblocks along the way to Las Vegas. This is a developing story. We will let you know more information as it becomes available.

Why Did Road Dogg Leave WWE?

The exact reason for Road Dogg’s WWE departure is not known at this time. However, there is growing speculation that the Armstrong family member is feeling the pressure of a declining business.

WWE is starting to slip after its record-setting boom around WrestleMania 40. This year’s WrestleMania in Las Vegas is underperforming, and this year’s card is being panned as lackluster, with plans constantly changing.

Road Dogg has a history of walking out of WWE when the going gets tough. The long-time Creative team member walked out of WWE in 2019 around WrestleMania 35. Many reported that Road Dogg left WWE due to the constant creative changes under Vince McMahon’s pen.

This past year, WWE has made many pivots. Some are due to injuries. Others are due to a lack of fan interest in current storylines. That’s where the blame gets placed on the creative team.

SmackDown, especially, is under scrutiny. The show is drawing fewer than 2 million viewers each week. Now, the Friday night staple is extended to three hours. This expansion means Creative needs to get stronger. With all eyes on Jesse James, insiders believe the Hall of Famer had enough, as Road Dogg departs WWE.

WWE Unreal Makes Road Dogg Look Bad

Many wrestlers aren’t fans of WWE Unreal for exposing too much of the business. It definitely exposed the frustrations of Road Dogg.

Road Dogg was a central focus of Season 2. The 6-time WWE Tag Team Champion was extremely emotional about the release of R-Truth, especially in terms of how it went down.

While R-Truth returned to the company, things continued to get sour between Road Dogg and WWE. One viral clip saw Road Dogg suggest taking the United States Title off of Guilia and putting it back onto the inaugural Champion, Chelsea Green.

When Triple H asked Road Dogg who Chelsea would face that she hadn’t before, Road Dogg couldn’t offer a solution. He just trailed off that Chelsea has something. This disagreement was during a tumultuous time in the Division’s history that even Chelsea Green criticized. Nonetheless, WWE would go with this exact scenario months later, as Chelsea would win the Title back from Guilia, before losing the gold to the Japanese sensation within two months.

Road Dogg’s History of Creative Team Shifts

Jesse James Armstrong has a long, storied career in the wrestling industry. After a wrestler hangs up the boots, the pressure doesn’t end if they take a role backstage. At 56 years old, perhaps the WWE Hall of Famer has had enough stress.

Rise from Producer to Co-Lead of Creative Team

Road Dogg’s backstage roles have varied over his long WWE career. The former Hardcore Champion took on a Producer position in 2011. He would get agent matches and run pre-taped segments.

Over time, Road Dogg worked his way up to the Creative Team. He sat in meetings around 2016 and would provide his input on many key storylines. Quickly, Jesse James became a Co-lead Writer for SmackDown with Ryan Ward.

Walkout and Transition to PC

Around WrestleMania 35, Jesse James quit the company after a disagreement with Vince McMahon’s demands for multiple script rewrites. Cooler heads prevailed, as Triple H convinced his former D-Generation X stablemate to join NXT in the Performance Center.

Road Dogg worked in many roles during his time in NXT. Many graduates noted that he was influential in helping develop promo skills and character work. Unfortunately, the DX icon was let go during the 2022 roster cuts.

Return from Roster Cuts Into SVP of Live Events

By summer, Vince McMahon lost power with WWE. With Triple H making decisions, Road Dogg was brought back to WWE in August 2022 as the Senior Vice President of Live Events.

As WWE settled into the TKO portfolio, more business-savvy team members were placed into business roles, like SVP of Live Events. One of their first decisions was to decreasethe number of Live Events.

Co-Lead Writer of SmackDown and Departure

In February 2025, Road Dogg transitioned from Live Events back into the Creative room. Once again, Road Dogg became the Co-lead Writer for SmackDown, alongside John Swikata. Now, one year later, Road Dogg departs WWE yet again.

With his former Tag Team partner, Billy Gunn, as a Producer for AEW, there might be work for Road Dogg. He just might have to call somebody!
