Terriers conclude the regular season tonight with a road game at
Lowell’s Tsongas Arena. Puck drop is set for 6 p.m. for the contest that will
be broadcast on NESN+ and live-streamed on ESPN+.
BU has clinched sixth place in
Hockey East but still has a chance to finish fifth and avoid the opening
round of playoffs. Terriers trail Maine by a point and must earn two more
points tonight than the Black Bears who are visiting Vermont. Finishing sixth
means an opening round home game against the Catamounts. Finishing fifth would
send BU into the quarterfinals for a road game against the #4 seed, which could
be UConn, BC or UMass, depending on the outcomes of their games tonight.
The Terriers’ top two goal-scorers, Cole Eiserman with 15 and Jack Harvey with 12, both have scored in each of the last three games. Mikhail Yegorov, who earned Hockey East co-Goalie of the Week honors, has yielded just two even-strength goals in his last three starts.
In January, BU and Lowell split a series with each team
winning on the road. The River Hawks snared a 4-3 overtime decision at Agganis,
while Yegorov pitched a 3-0 shutout at Tsongas.
BU goes into the game with all hands available with the
possible exception of freshman Conrad Fondrk. He missed the second BC game with
an injury and, according to Coach Jay Pandolfo, will be a game-time decision.
Lowell has dropped its last three games–and five of the
last eight—including a 5-3 loss to Merrimack two days ago. Senior Dillan
Bentley leads the offense with a 13-9-22 line, followed by junior Jak Vaarwerk
and freshman Dalyn Wakely with 19 points each. Grad student Jay Ahearn, a grad
transfer from Niagara has 18 points including 12 goals.
Veteran TJ Schweighardt, along with freshmen Luke Shipley,
Nate Misskey and Josh Mori, anchors the defense. Freshman Austin Elliott (2.75
gaa/0.885 sv %) has been the starter in goal recently while senior Samuel
Richard (3.45/.904) was in goal for Lowell’s January win over the Terriers.

On the 20th episode of Inside
BU Hockey, Bernie Corbett talks with men’s ice hockey Head Coach Pandolfo and freshman Ben Merrill. A Montreal 2024 draft pick, he scored twice in Saturday’s 5-1 win at BC: a shorthanded breakaway in the opening period and a snipe from the right circle in the third.
►NESN’s This Week in Hockey East features a
conversation with freshman center and Bruins draft pick Jonathan Morello.
In the latest entry to his NHL Draft Diary, Tynan Lawrence discusses the Winter Olympics, the weekend sweep vs. Boston College and his growth under the BU
coaching staff.
Personally, I think I’m just getting more comfortable with
the guys on my team, my linemates. We’re building chemistry and you kind of see
it progress every game. I feel it showed in the weekend series against Boston
College. I feel like I’ve just got to keep building chemistry and have fun with
it.
