Peñarol downed Selknam on Saturday, claiming a 40-27 home victory in Montevideo. The win was Peñarol’s first of the Super Rugby Americas (SRA) 2026 season. It came after comprehensive defeats in the opening two rounds of the season; however, it also came against Selknam, a team missing 22 players to international duty this weekend in Italy.
Peñarol’s pathway to victory over Selknam came tries from forwards in the first half and from back s in the second. Peñarol hooker, Joaquín Myszka scored a first-half double from lineout to maul tries. Selknam’s first-half try was also scored in this way with debutant Alan Pedrol scoring.
The match opened up in the second-half. Peñarol ran in four tries and Selknam scored three. It meant both teams scored a bonus point for scoring four tries while Peñarol came away with the maximum of five competition points.
Alfonso Perillo and Santiago Wood exchanged tries for the two teams early in the half. Both tries were pieces of good luck. Replacement back Tomás Baca Castex scored Peñarol’s bonus point try on 54 minutes before Sebastian Pérez added another for Peñarol six minutes later.
Peñarol’s final score was a beautiful try with the best back on the field, Justo Ferrario, splitting the defense and scoring on 67 minutes. From there, Selknam regathered to score twice in the final ten minutes. Lucas Berti scored one and then set up another as Tomás Baguley completed a successful return from a serious injury suffered in SRA 2025.
Peñarol remain at home for their Week 4 fixture which will be against Os Cobras. Selknam play again on the road, this time against Los Dogos in Córdoba, Argentina.
