Dawn Staley, South Carolina Fail to Extend 3-Year Winning Streak After Unexpected Upset

When the South Carolina stretched their game winning streak to 12 after defeating the LSU on Saturday, it appeared they were on track to clinch a fourth straight SEC Championship. Unfortunately, the stars didn’t align well for the Gamecocks on Sunday.

Dawn Staley was looking for her 10th SEC Tournament Championship since taking over as the head coach of South Carolina women’s basketball team back in 2008. But the Texas Longhorns, under Vic Schaefer, had other plans inside the Bon Secours Wellness Arena.

In what can be described as a shocking result, the Longhorns beat Gamecocks 78-61, thus shattering their hopes to win a fourth straight Championship.

After losing against Kentucky in 2022, the Gamecocks went on to win the SEC Tournament in 2023, 2024 and 2025. But they couldn’t extend their streak this time.

Longhorns’ forward Madison Booker led from the front, scoring 18 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Another forward Justice Carlton also made a valuable contribution with 15 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists.

From the side of the Gamecocks, star player and forward Joyce Edwards scored 13 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists. But her performance wasn’t enough.

Speaking more of Texas’ victory on Sunday, it turned special for the head coach Schaefer. He finally managed to beat Dawn Staley for the first time in the postseason.
