Free State Challenge Cup Rekindles Club Rugby Passion Across the Province

The Free State Rugby Union (FSRU) is pleased with the exciting start of the Free State Challenge Cup, a club rugby competition aimed at reviving and strengthening grassroots rugby across the province.

The competition, which is currently in its third week, features twelve clubs divided into three pools, with teams competing for a R30 000 prize purse and the honour of becoming the Free State Challenge Cup champions.

The tournament forms part of the Free State Rugby Union’s broader vision to re-energise club rugby and bring communities back to the heart of the game. Early matches have already delivered competitive and entertaining rugby, reflecting the passion and pride that exists within Free State club structures.

The final of the Free State Challenge Cup will take place on 28 March. The occasion promises to give club players the opportunity to showcase their talent on a premier stage while celebrating the importance of club rugby in the province.

Free State Rugby Union President Coenraad Klopper emphasised the importance of rebuilding the club rugby culture.

“Club rugby is the cornerstone of any rugby union. It is where the game truly lives, in our communities and local clubs. The Free State Challenge Cup is an important step in reviving the passion, competitiveness and pride of club rugby in our province, and we encourage supporters to get involved and rally behind their local teams.”

The Free State Rugby Union invites supporters, communities and rugby stakeholders to attend the remaining matches and particularly the final at Toyota Stadium, as the province celebrates the resurgence of club rugby.

Through initiatives like the Free State Challenge Cup, the FSRU aims to restore the energy, competitiveness and community spirit that have always defined rugby in the Free State.
